El bol blau・ 青いうつわ

Blue bowl・青いうつわ

There is a beautiful shop in Osaka called Kohoro. My partner bought two navy blue bowls there—they are identical, yet different. As they are handmade, each has its own unique, inimitable nuances. They aren't very tall, and their split-rim design is quite rare, yet they are also very simple and pleasing to the eye.

At first, I used one of the bowls for tomato and lettuce salad, but I soon realized that a portion for two people exceeded the piece's capacity. I loved how the green and red colors were complemented by the blue, and it saddened me a little that I couldn't use the bowl exactly as I had intended. Although I could have prepared the salad separately—one portion in each bowl—I preferred to share a single piece. I think that when we share a dish, it creates conversation and a sense of warmth at the table.

However, as I began to learn how to cook Japanese food, I grew accustomed to the local style of serving (smaller but more varied portions). I discovered new ingredients and new colors that were a delight to bring to the table in my blue bowl.

Whenever I use one of these bowls to serve squash, a small salad, or any other dish prepared with care, I’m so glad to have them in my home.
